About

Reimagining how the Valley moves.

The Coachella Valley is growing, and SunLine wants to grow with it. Rides Reimagined is our opportunity to take a fresh look at our network and design a transit system that can serve where people live, work, and play.

We’re doing this to:

🗺️ Reflect where people live and work today
The Valley has changed—our routes should too.

🏥 Connect you to what matters
Better access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and everyday essentials.

⏱️ Provide service you can count on
Reliable buses mean less waiting and more certainty.

💰 Use our resources wisely
Making the most of every bus, driver, and dollar we have.

😊 Create a better rider experience
A system that’s easier to use, navigate, and enjoy.

How We Do It

The Core Question: Ridership or Coverage

With a fixed number of buses and drivers, every decision involves a trade-off. Should we concentrate service where it can be most frequent and timely — or spread it out to reach as much of the Valley as possible? That's the tension between Ridership and Coverage, and it's the central question driving this process.

  • Ridership means putting buses where there's the most activity and demand. Service is frequent and dependable, but concentrated in the busiest corridors.
  • Coverage means spreading service across more of the Valley. More places are connected, but buses come less often.

Doing more of one means doing less of the other. We've developed two conceptual network designs to show you what each approach could look like in practice.

The Road Map

How this works — and where we are now

Rides Reimagined unfolds in phases, each with a chance for you to weigh in.

Phase 1

Understanding Community Needs

December 2025 – March 2026

We asked how people travel today and what they’d like from transit. Over 1,900 surveys came back from across the Valley.

Phase 2

Phase 2: Setting Transit Priorities

April 2026 - July 2026

We're now exploring the trade-off between Ridership and Coverage through two conceptual service network designs. Your feedback during this phase tells us what the community values most — and directly guides what comes next.

Phase 3

Phase 3: Developing Network Service Designs

Fall 2026

Using what we’ve learned from Phases 1 and 2, we’ll develop a Draft Plan that reflects community values and outlines a clearer direction for the future network — along with growth scenarios showing how the system could expand with additional resources.

Final Plan

Final Network Plan

Late 2026 - Early 2027

After a final round of community engagement, the recommended network will be refined into a Service Plan and presented to the SunLine Board of Directors for adoption.

SunLine is working with Jarrett Walker + Associates on transit planning and Kearns & West on community engagement to develop this plan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

SunLine is studying how to improve its bus network to better meet the needs of riders in the Coachella Valley. This includes a system redesign (branded as SunLine: Rides Reimagined) that evaluates how routes, service levels, and stop locations work today and identifies potential changes for the future. As part of this work, SunLine will consider service adjustments and develop new network concepts to inform where, when, and how SunLine operates over the next 5-10 years.

The SunLine: Rides Reimagined effort includes:

  • Assessing current service patterns, ridership, and connections.
  • Studying bus stop infrastructure to improve safety and perception.
  • Evaluating options for a redesigned route network that could better match where people live, work, and travel.
