Thousand Palms, CA, June 10, 2014: SunLine Transit Agency honored Taylor Schlicht of Palm Valley School, and Veida Kirby of Nellie N. Coffman Middle School — winners of the first annual SunLine Student Art Contest — Monday, June 9th at a well-attended reception at Desert Regional Medical Center.

Schlicht and Kirby’s winning entries were unveiled in a larger than life format as wraps enveloping the Agency’s two new 8th generation hydrogen fuel cell buses. Their winning entries were the highlights of the many entries from talented elementary and middle school students across the Coachella Valley. Their original artwork featured the Desert Regional Medical Center’s landmark El Mirador Tower.

Veida Kirby states, “I wanted to do this drawing contest, but most of all, I wanted the opportunity to support an environmentally friendly project. I will do whatever I can to keep the earth clean and healthy. I was thrilled to find out that I was selected as one of the winners, and excited about having my art work displayed on one of the new SunBuses for everyone in the Coachella Valley to see.” Taylor Schlicht states, “I enjoyed this contest because these new Hydrogen Fuel Cell busses with zero emissions are great for the environment! So it is an even greater honor to have my artwork be a part of it.”

“We are so proud Taylor and Veida and all of the students, educators and parents who contributed to the success of this event," said Lauren Skiver, CEO/General Manager of SunLine Transit Agency. "Through community events like this Student Art Contest, SunLine collaborates with wonderful partners, such as the Desert Regional Medical Center, to build awareness of public transit, promote safe transport for children, students and adults across the region, and prompt the public to “think green” when traveling around the Valley.”

SunLine Chairman of the Board and Indio Councilmember Glenn Miller said, “As the new fuel cell buses travel throughout the Valley showcasing the art work of the two contest winners, we will be reminded of SunLine’s commitment of this community to sustain a healthy, clean environment.”

SunLine’s new buses from Ballard Power SystemsBAE Systems and ElDorado National underscores SunLine’s longstanding tradition as a leader in the deployment of clean transportation technologies in the United States and will bring the total number of Ballard powered fuel cell buses to four at SunLine Transit Agency.
