(Thousand Palms, CA) – SunLine Transit Agency – in support of a national initiative sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) – encourages Coachella Valley residents and visitors to ‘dump the pump’ on Thursday, June 19, 2025. In support of Dump the Pump Day, which was first celebrated in 2006, SunLine Transit Agency will be offering free fares on all its fixed route services (Routes 1EV, 1WV through 9) throughout the entire day.

“National ‘Dump the Pump Day’ is the perfect time to explore the advantages of public transportation,” said Mona Babauta, CEO/General Manager of SunLine Transit Agency. “By opting to ride the bus, individuals can reduce fuel costs, lessen environmental impact and make productive use of their travel time. With the convenience of our bus tracker app, Transit app, and complimentary onboard Wi-Fi, riding SunLine has never been more efficient or user-friendly. We encourage the community to join others around the country on June 19th to experience the many benefits of transit firsthand.”

According to the APTA’s Transit Savings Report, a person in a two-person household can save an average of $10,116 per year by downsizing to one car and using public transit instead. That breaks down to roughly $843 per month in combined savings on gas, maintenance, insurance and other auto-related expenses.

Public transit use in the U.S. saves approximately 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year—about 11 million gallons daily. That equates to the equivalent of 300,000 fewer automobile fill‑ups every day.
