Duties & Responsibilities

Payroll Accountant is responsible for the Agency’s payroll operations and performs highly responsible duties in the preparation, administration and maintenance of payroll transactions and records. The incumbent is accountable for ensuring the payroll function is performed in strict adherence with relevant laws and codes, Agency policies and procedures and in accordance with sound financial management principles and practices. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies, procedures and guidelines and performs related duties as assigned.

Inputs employee work hours and absences into the payroll system, verifying correct pay rates, differentials, premium pay hours and adequacy of leave time; calculates overtime and driver guarantee time, ensuring accuracy of the calculations in conformance with bargaining agreement requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:  High School Diploma required
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in performing payroll duties and functions; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Bargaining agreement stipulations experience preferred
  • Experience in a public agency is desired
  • California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency’s insurance policy
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
